Appendix III

Changes to Second Edition

On the whole, there are no great difference between the two editions. However, the Dedication (see illustration below) and the Preface have disappeared, but the Contents pages, including the Parochial Description - now amended to include the two missing churches - and the List of (new) Plates have been brought to the front, hence the pagination is 4 or 5 pages off. Otherwise, the printer has attempted to keep the text to the original pagination while making marginal changes. These include generally modernising both spelling and layout (e.g., tryals to trials, Taylors to tailors, 60 to sixty, Henry 2nd to Henry II, l. to £, and losing the carry over word at foot of page), two or three other spelling improvements (e.g. Countess Weare to Weir, but to butt of wine).

In Chapter II a new story has been introduced, the Awful Visitation of 1080, of thunder and lightning confined to Exeter and not otherwise recorded (2nd Ed. p.25).  There are two or three further additions, e.g. (p.28) Siege of Exeter Castle in 1140 by Stephen, (p.30, previously 31) Baker´s Chronicles, and Jews buried in Exeter, meaning that page settings had to be adjusted accordingly. The text page matches again after page 36. Pages 48-51 and 68-69 show minor changes of this nature.

All the Errata from the First Edition are incorporated. All of these occurred in Chapter IV and all but that on page 223 (removed) updated. All mention of Isaac has been corrected to Izacke. Page 221 Downes now corrected (not in original list). Page 397 (1st Ed. p.392) shows a new footnote and a new title has been introduced on page 403 (p.408).
